Ill Manors Film Review

Key Points
Evidence from film
Your opinion
Director- who is it and what else have they directed that you have heard of?

The film was directed Ben Drew, also known as ‘Plan B’  who is a famous UK rapper and artist. He has not directed any other films as his career is based around the music industry therefore this was his first ever approach to film making. However he has acted in a similar style film called ‘Adulthood’ and also in ‘The Sweeney’ which he was credited for after he directed IlLL Manors
As myself being an aspiring film maker, I can not  talk about him attempting to direct a film something that is negative because for something that was his first film is a great achievement. However the way he is credited for the film can be mis-leading as he had many production managers make sure this film became a success. Similarly with the screenplay.
Main stars- Who are they? Will people be familiar with them already? What are they known for?

The main stars are Riz Ahmed who plays Aaron (known for ‘Four Lions’) and Ed Skrein who plays Ed who is known for ‘The Transporter Refuelled’.
The actors are not familiar to me at this point and I never saw them appear in the films I watch mainly because I watch more Hollywood productions.
Plot- what is the film about?

The lives of four drug dealers, one user and two prostitutes. Aaron struggles his way through the gang life and is confronted with a difficult situation whether to keep or sell a baby.
I believe that the film focuses on each part of different people's lives in the poor working social class. The film explores the ways in which people behave and the actions that they take.
Characters- Who are the main ones and which actors play them? Comment on the quality of acting.

Riz Ahmed portrays the characters Aaron and his appearance in the film remains strong. However he is categorised  as a more sensitive gangster as he is thinks before making decisions. Ed Shrein who portrays Ed suits the role of an opposite to Aaron and represents a gang type life very well.
I believe that then characters are played well in the film as they each have a certain role that brings a lot of storyline to the film.
Genre- What type of film is it? Does it fit your expectations for this type of film? How would you describe the mood?

Drama/Crime: We see a range of use of drugs, weapons and swearing.
This film falls under:
  • Arthouse
  • Drama
  • Crime
  • Violence
Soundtrack- Did you notice like/dislike it? How did it create the atmosphere?

The soundtrack added to the atmosphere as the hip hop/ rap music related to the things that happened in the frame with Plan B also being the director of the film we see a lot of synergy between the 2 medias.
I felt engaged in the parts of the film where action was taking place because the things happening with the film were really embraced by the music.
Audience- Who is it aimed at and do you recommend it?
Why?

The film certificate for this film was 18.
The audience can appeal to a wide range of people as the film is presented with troubled young kids therefore younger audiences may appeal to this as they want to experience the 'hood' life without actually doing it. I also believe that middle class people may enjoy this film as they have no knowledge or experience that these people actually exist in society.
