MIGRAIN Introduction to Media: Reading an image





  • Denotation: 50 cent is endorsing Reebok's product. One side of the poster displays himself and the other shows a police fingerprint record sheet. 
  • Connotation: 50 cent's face expression gives an impression of survival and power therefore Reebok's products will make everyone who purchases feel the same way as he did. The fingerprint record signifies the identity of the company and that 50 cent is the identity. He himself is representing the brand. On the other hand it could be a way to represent 50 cent's history in crime and that he has survived 'all of the worst' and that with Reebok we (the consumer) can replicate his actions.
  • Colour: The poster is desaturated completely to black and white. This could be done for several reasons such as: making the reader have an emotional connection, represent 50 cent's dark past or simply just the fact that white text on a black background is easily readable and catches the readers attention quicker then gets straight to the point instead of coloured posters which (if overdone) can make reading a poster far more difficult.
  • Pose: The main subject is positioned at an angle towards the camera.
  • Framing: On the left side of the poster, 50 cent is framed in a close up so that his face expression can be seen much clearer and the reader can feel more intimidated. Additionally, on the other side a close up of fingerprints can is shown for the same effect.
  • Composition: The whole poster is presented as split-page. The text remains on the right side of the poster expect the 'I AM' from the text: 'I am what I am'. The only reason for this is because 50 cent is on the left side and it makes it seem like he is saying these words himself to the reader.
  • Size: The poster is in landscape. Both images are equal in terms of size 50/50.
  • Type of shot: 2x Close up
  • Subject matter: 50 cent & Reebok.
  • Setting: Unknown, dark scene, police station.
  • Lighting: Low key, under-lighting.



    • VW Hedgehog




    • Denotation: A hedgehog in line with 3 bag packaged gold-fish
    • Connotation: The hedgehog represents the Volkswagen new car and it's new parking technology. This also connotes that the hedgehog (due to its sharp spikes) is has far more superior than compared to the gold-fish. To add to this fish in general as seen to be unintelligent therefore Volkswagen could possibly be advertising their product with reverse psychology. Furthermore the spikes suggest that the Volkswagen technology has great precision which this links to the tag line in the bottom right corner 'Precision Parking'.
    • Colour: The colour in this poster is very minimal as the only visible colours seem to be on the subjects themselves. Orange and shades of grey are on the poster with the Volkswagen logo which is blue.
    • Pose: The goldfish and hedgehog are standing in line at an angle to replicate parked cars in real life.
    • Framing: The poster and it's main image is frames on an angle so that we can interpret the hedgehog and fish as cars as if they are parked at a car park.
    • Composition: The subjects were composed in a linear way however overall the poster does not have anything that was really composed as it's on  white background. The only feature that really stands out it that the 2 of the goldfish are looking towards the hedgehog which could possibly suggest that they are intimidated by how amazing the new parking technology is.
    • Size: The subjects seen on the poster are small and therefore easily identifiable as that.
    • Type of shot: Wide/Closeup. 
    • Subject matter: Hedgehog and 3 goldfish
    • Setting: Unknown, on floor.
    • Lighting: High key lighting.
