Ideology and binary opposition

What examples of binary opposition can you suggest from watching this clip?

  • Society vs Politics vs Government.
  • Good vs Evil.
  • Celebrity vs Politician.
  • Public vs Celebrity.
  • Public vs Politician.
  • Rich vs Poor.
  • Upper Class vs Lower Class.
  • Villain vs Hero.
  • Immigrants vs Wealthy.
  • Comedy vs Real Life.

What ideologies are on display in this clip?
A common ideology is the question of 'Is the government making any changes to the immigration policy?' and we see the audiences reaction to both the parties of the discussion having immediate reactions to what they are saying. Most people in the audience agree with Nigel Farage's decisions made with the government policies and mostly don't listen to Brand's points about how bad the decisions being made are. He tries to expose him for what he really is but isn't taken seriously because the way he structures his sentences are rather comedic than political.

To add to this the audience agrees with the point about there being too many immigrants in the country and causing issues such as taking British people's jobs. The majority of the audience looks like working class and this is backed up with what they say to both parties which is one of the reasons that they are being defensive over themselves and blame their immigrants because they already probably earn a low salary therefore it makes sense in the argument.

What examples of binary opposition can you suggest from watching this clip?

  • America vs World
  • News Anchor vs Host
  • News Anchor vs College Student
  • News Anchor vs America
  • Good vs Bad
  • Greatest vs Worst
  • Facts vs Fiction

What ideologies are on display in this clip?
The main ideology is when the news anchor starts to talk about why America is not the greatest country in the world. The audience and the host have a strong reaction to the subject and at one point the host tries to stop him from stating the truth. The audience has been manipulated by the government and politics that it can't see what is real until the news anchor finaly starts to speak about the past of America and how it 'used to be' the greatest country in the world and how the current situation can be mended. At this point the audience and panel start to listen to what he is saying and actually take it in. All people in the panel are white which represents the white ethnic power that people have in society and especially in politics and the media.
